Flick’s Frustration: «We lost possession too frequently»
A key point of frustration for Flick regarding Barcelona’s performance was their handling of possession, feeling they conceded the initiative to the Magpies. Nevertheless, he expressed contentment with his side’s defensive efforts.
«Our ball retention wasn’t good; we gave away possession too often, which is precisely what Newcastle thrives on,» Flick explained. «We knew they are very swift in their transitions. It wasn’t an easy game, but I’m very pleased with my team, especially our defense; we defended exceptionally well across the pitch. Our two central defenders performed a phenomenal job.»
He added, «We might have been tired, but we played a highly intense match given the atmosphere and the opposition. I am very happy and appreciate what I observed defensively, though we absolutely need to play much better with the ball. Had you offered me a 1-1 draw beforehand, I would have gladly accepted.»
Ronald Araujo’s Role at Right-Back
Before the match, Eric Garcia was expected to start at right-back but was relegated to the bench due to muscle discomfort. Instead of repositioning Joao Cancelo to right-back and Gerard Martin to left-back—their more natural roles—with Ronald Araujo in central defense, Araujo directly replaced Garcia on the right flank.
«He executed his role effectively,» Flick commented on Araujo’s performance. «We preferred not to alter too many positions; it was clear our intention was to play with Cubarsi and Gerard as center-backs. Xavi Espart made his debut, coming on for Araujo in the final stages after the Uruguayan suffered cramps.
«There are no excuses; we had sufficient players available, and you could even see, when Xavi entered, that he performed very well,» Flick affirmed. «That’s precisely what I want to witness, and I’m pleased about it.»
Hansi Flick: «We must manage Pedri’s playing time»
Following the match, several questions arose concerning Barcelona’s physical condition, particularly given that an exhausted Pedri, Marc Bernal, and Araujo all had to be substituted, evidently struggling.
«Right now, rest is imperative; the players’ primary task is to recuperate and prepare thoroughly for Sunday’s match,» Flick emphasized. «We will have several days to prepare, and there won’t be any actual rest, but that’s typical. Pedri, arguably Barcelona’s standout player on the night, was withdrawn with twenty minutes remaining.
«We have to judiciously manage his playing time, and with Pedri, we must exercise particular caution,» Flick explained. «He has sustained two injuries this season, having just returned from the last one. Naturally, everyone wants him on the pitch because he is the player who dictates the ball.»
Barcelona is set to host Sevilla on Sunday night, before welcoming Newcastle to Camp Nou the following Wednesday for a decisive second-leg encounter.
