Following statements by Argentine forward Julian Alvarez, the club has reacted strongly, threatening legal action against Barcelona.
The Julian Alvarez situation has officially reignited in Madrid. The Argentine forward, currently under contract with Atletico, spoke in the mixed zone after Argentina’s victory against Austria in the 2026 World Cup, confirming he had requested a transfer to «fulfill a dream.»
That dream, unstated, is Barcelona, and it has naturally provoked a reaction from Atletico Madrid. Through the pages of AS, they have denied any intention of negotiating the sale of the striker «for any amount» and, more importantly, have threatened to take the matter to court.
Alvarez’s Words
Here are Alvarez’s words from the mixed zone where he confirms he requested to leave: «Future? The truth is I don’t know. I don’t think this is the time to talk, but I can’t hide either. I believe I am an honest person. I have spoken with the people who run the club, with those I needed to be sure to speak with. I believe the best thing for everyone is a transfer. And I would like to fulfill my dream.»
‘There is no price, only the clause’
Atletico has slammed the door on negotiations, reiterating that if Barcelona wants Alvarez, they must pay his release clause: «There is no amount that Barcelona can pay for Julián, and he will not be sold to Barcelona. Either they pay the €500 million release clause, or nothing.»
Legal Threats
The Colchoneros’ spokesperson also attacked Barcelona’s modus operandi, which they consider fraudulent, confirming they are considering suing Barcelona: «We have seen how Barcelona operates in the past. Everyone knows they are a dishonest club. But they have encountered a club that will not allow it.»
